Stratification of Styles
by Davide Terrile
From Central Park, bare trees create a natural foreground to a dense section of the Manhattan skyline. Buildings of different eras and materials overlap: modern glass skyscrapers stand alongside historic masonry buildings and construction sites. The Essex House sign emerges as a recognizable landmark within a complex and layered urban fabric.
The vertical composition compresses the different architectural layers of the skyline, almost nullifying depth. The use of a standard 50mm lens renders proportions in a balanced way, while the closed aperture (f/5) keeps the entire accumulation of volumes in focus.
