A man crosses a crosswalk, moving away from a group of people waiting on the sidewalk of a New York street. A truck occupies part of the roadway, while a column of steam rising between buildings introduces a mobile element into the urban grid.

The vertical composition accentuates the mass of the buildings, which compress the street scene below. Depth is constructed in successive planes: the crosswalk in the foreground, human figures and vehicles, and finally the architectural backdrops that close the view.
