Verticality and Counterpoints

by Davide Terrile

The profiles of the buildings on Central Park South stand out against an overcast sky. The extreme verticality of a contemporary glass and steel skyscraper contrasts with the more classic forms of adjacent buildings, including Essex House, introducing a dialectic between different materials and architectural styles.

The vertical framing accentuates the upward thrust of the buildings, with the tallest tower as the focal point of the composition. The use of a standard focal length (50mm) and an intermediate aperture (f/5) renders the entire architectural plane with definition, from the glass surfaces to the canopies of the trees in the foreground.
